Hypomonē (hoop-om-on-ay'): Endurance, perseverance, patience, steadfastness
TThis is one of my favorite Greek words and I think it's because it corrects something I (honestly!) get wrong all the time. This week's Greek word is hypomonē, which means endurance. It literally means "to remain under" giving us the picture of being under a weight and just simply enduring it.
We tend to picture faith as triumph and sometimes it really does look like that!! But hypomonē reflects to us a more relatable story. I know we all feel pressure in our lives. But faithfulness often means remaining despite the pressure.
But, good news: James says trials produce this kind of endurance and endurance has to finish its work before you come out mature and complete. Romans says suffering produces perseverance which produces character and that produces hope. It's a chain of good growth in Jesus, but you definitely don't get to skip the hard part!
Something to think about: sometimes God calls us to stay and show up again tomorrow, still believing, even when nothing around you has changed yet. Maybe He's calling you to that kind of ὑπομονή faith.
Friend, where do you need to stay under the weight, instead of trying to escape it?
Scriptures where we find "hypomonē":
Romans 5:3-4 — "we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance..."
James 1:3 — "the testing of your faith produces perseverance..."
Hebrews 12:1 — "let us run with endurance the race set before us..."
