Delight(חָפֵץ) is trained- don't wait for it

Chaphets (khaw-fates'): To delight in, to take pleasure in, to desire

This week's Hebrew word is chaphets. What is cool about this word is that it challenges the way you think about your relationship with God's Word.

We tend to think of delight as something that either happens to us or it doesn't. You either feel excited about reading your Bible or you don't. You either want to pray or you don't. But chaphets tells a different story. In Scripture, delight is something that can be cultivated — a desire that grows as you pursue it.

Psalm 1 opens with a picture of the blessed person: someone whose chaphets, whose delight, is in the law of the LORD and who meditates on it day and night. That's not describing someone who naturally finds the Bible thrilling every single morning. That's describing someone who has made a practice of returning to it until it becomes the thing they love most.

Then look at what God Himself chaphets in! It is not burnt offerings and empty ritual, but steadfast love, justice, and righteousness.

What God delights in tells us everything about who He is. And what we delight in tells us everything about who we're becoming.

Spiritual maturity isn't just doing the right things — it's slowly, over time, wanting what God wants. That's chaphets.

What would it look like to actively cultivate delight in God's Word this week, rather than waiting to feel it?

Psalm 1:2 — "But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on His law day and night."

Psalm 40:8 — "I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart."

Hosea 6:6 — "For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings."
